Ask a psychiatrist about your situation, and get a reply!
Cognitive Therapy, also known as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a technique to help anxiety and depression which has been practised for very many years, mainly by psychologists, and to a limited extent by some psychiatrists. Research has repeatedly shown it is effective when used alone in mild to moderate depression, and research has also repeatedly shown that the combination of medication with CBT produces the best outcome.
CBT is also very effective in fighting off relapses of anxiety or depression, especially if you are not taking medication in the future.
1) Continuously available therapy:
The Australian National University, using the results of years of expertise and research, has launched a free service on the internet to help people with anxiety and depression through the use of CBT. The system also offers free therapy for problems of lack of confidence, which can distress many people secretly.
You can register on the site (using either your real name or make up a name if you are concerned about your privacy, but do remember the name you choose!). You will also need to provide an email address to receive your password (You can create a new anonymous Hotmail, Gmail or similar email address if you wish if your current email address identifies you, and you have concerns about this.)
The system will then ask you about your symptoms, and indicate in the results how severe your symptoms are, and will then guide you through the process of helping you to treat yourself. You can come back to the system as often as you like, and continue your free on-line therapy whenever it suits you.
The site is called MoodGym. The internet reference is
(Do note that there is no www before the name)
Or just enter MoodGym into your search engine.
2) Research programmes offering treatment from time to time
CBT is not only good for depression, but also for Panic and for excessive Shyness.
www.climateclinic.tv is a research and treatment site run by a Sydney professor, Prof Gavin Andrews. If you register with them, they will inform you of the next wave of research/treatment being offered.
3) Email correspondence with a psychiatrist:
Have you ever wished you could get an initial assessment of your concerns about yourself or someone close to you, or another opinion about your diagnosis and treatment?
www.depnet.com.au is a free community service by a prominent pharmaceutical company, who have absolutely no interest in promoting their individual medications in this way. They have a panel of psychiatrists who will read your email, and respond (usually within a week).
Check www.depnet.com.au, and see some of the letters they publish and reply for the benefit of all (deidentified of course).
Note: This service is available in other languages also. Check www.depnet.com
